The first song from Bang Bang will be out tomorrow and all we know about it so far is that it has been composed by Vishal-Shekhar and that the video will see Hrithik Roshan airborne. Titled “Tu Meri”, the song is obviously is a chance for Roshan to showcase his killer dance moves. In an industry where Pat The Dog And Screw The Lightbulb was considered dancing, Roshan was one of the first heroes to grab eyeballs because of his actual dancing skills. Will “Tu Meri” make it to the Roshan hall of fame? We’ll know first thing tomorrow morning. For those who are really desperate to just see random glimpses of Roshan and his Bang Bang-co star Katrina Kaif, you can watch the teaser. (Yes, now we get teasers for songs. Which are effectively the teasers for the film. It’s all very meta.) While we wait to see what moves he’s added to his repertoire, here’s a look at some of the actor’s more memorable dance sequences. 1. ‘Ek Pal Ka Jeena’ from Kaho Na… Pyaar Hai It’s baffling that a dance step that basically mimes pulling of a rope managed to get the actor some serious dance cred, but that’s precisely what happened. Roshan’s iconic dance move of pushing and lifting his hands is imitated by aunties and uncles in weddings even today and back when Kaho Na… Pyaar Hai released, Roshan was expected to do the move at countless public appearances. In the film, the song was the setup for the film’s critical reveal: that Roshan had a double role. A heartbroken Ameesha Patel spots Roshan in a club in Switzerland and can’t believe her eyes because ZOMG! She’s seeing her dead boyfriend! Dancing! In a club in Switzerland! The film established the actor’s reputation as an immensely talented dancer. 2. ‘You are my Soniya’ from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham By the time Roshan had been cast as the second lead in this film, the actor’s dancing talents were well-known and much-loved. Which is why it’s difficult to understand why on earth he was made to do choreography that was basically Jane Fonda’s aerobic exercise routine done in an outfit made of garbage bags. There’s a lot of jumping around and slapping of thighs. The recurring motif is a fist pump accompanying a pelvic thrust. No matter how sinuously Roshan made his pelvis swivel, his hips, like Shakira’s, could not lie: the choreography in this song was so bad, it’s unforgettable. 3. ‘It’s magic’ from Koi Mil Gaya In the movie, this scene showed Roshan’s transformation from the bullied, autistic Rohit to the hunky object of Preity Zinta’s affections. Although, he has some competition from Jadoo, the friendly alien, also known as Desi Cousin of Steven Spielberg’s E.T., Roshan’s moves are pretty neat. There were leaps, flips and a lot of nifty footwork in choreography that made good use of Roshan’s almost unreal extensions. He deserves particular credit for being able to look cool despite the ghastly wardrobe comprising red pants, blue shirt and yellow scarf. The Irish band U2 got it right: love is indeed blindness because Roshan got the girl in the film. 4. ‘Dhoom Again’ from Dhoom 2 In Dhoom 2, Roshan was seen in a variety of disguises, but it was when he strode up to the camera wearing a dirty ganji and perilously low-waisted pants for “Dhoom Again”, women swooned and the choreographer delighted at having an actor who could make fist pumps look vaguely graceful. Roshan’s steps in the song included a bizarre one in which he does a crotch-shimmy and raises his hand to the sky. Later on in the film, his sizzling chemistry with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in “Dil Laga Na” is rumoured to have made some in the Bachchan household rather uncomfortable. Apparently, the Bachchans were uncomfortable about their bahu’s image and ordered the producers to axe kissing scenes between the two actors, which was a weird demand since the song is way hotter than the thoroughly insipid onscreen kiss that Roshan and Bachchan shared. 5. ‘Krazzy 4’ from the film ‘Krazzy 4’ Roshan’s item number in this film served as a promotional song for his father’s first film release, with Roshan Senior roping in Junior for the film’s publicity even though the actor didn’t have a role in the film. The ploy served its purpose with Roshan’s dancing made the song a highlight. Roshan’s Michael Jackson-esque dance steps made the song an instant hit. Then it was discovered that the song was plagiarized from composer Ram Sampath, which didn’t do the forgettable Krazzy 4 much good. But hey, at least Roshan got a chance to do his Michael Jackson moves. The actor has been a fan since he was a child and when he was shooting for Kites in Los Angeles, Roshan actually got to meet Jackson. Special mention: Hrithik Roshan’s neck in the film Guzaarish What is dance but the body expressing itself most eloquently? In Guzaarish, Roshan’s character may have been paralysed, but the popping and twitching veins of his neck made up for the lack of movement in the rest of his body. During the course of the movie, he twists his neck in uncomfortable angles, neighs like a horse and is generally never at rest, which is a little weird for a man who’s supposed to be paralysed neck down.
The teaser for the new Bang Bang song ‘Tu Meri’ has been released, giving a snippet of a highly energetic dance performance by the film’s lead pair.
