After producing films like Aniruddha Roy's courtroom drama Pink in 2016 and Amit Roy's romantic comedy Running Shaadi in 2017, Shoojit Sircar will finally turn to direction now. Instead of making the lighthearted slice-of-life films that he is renowned for, Sircar is planning to direct a dark gritty film, starring Varun Dhawan.

Varun's career graph is dominated by romantic comedies but he also managed to silence his critics with an intense act in Sriram Raghavan's dark revenge drama Badlapur. DNA reports that it was then that Sircar was blown by Varun's performance. He believes that Varun can even make a dark film quite entertaining.

Sircar's last dark film was Madras Cafe, a dark spy thriller in 2013. But he is more popular for his breezy entertainers like Vicky Donor and Piku. This is the same case as Varun who is best known for his commercial potboilers like Karan Johar's Student of the Year, Remo D'Souza's ABCD 2 and Shashank Khaitan's Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.

Zoom reports that even Varun has been an avid buff of Sircar's films and is keen on collaborating with the filmmaker at the end of this year.

As of now, he is busy promoting Khaitan's Badrinath Ki Dulhania, which is the sequel of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. He will begin shooting for another sequel, his father David Dhawan's comedy Judwaa 2 after the release of Badrinath Ki Dulhania on 10 March.

Judwaa 2 is slated to release on 29 September after which he will begin working on Sircar's film. Meanwhile, Sircar also has two films lined up - 1911 and Agra Ka Daabra, as per a report by The Indian Express. 1911 is his first period film after Madras Cafe. It also stars John Abraham who plays Shiv Das Bhaduri, the footballer who captained Mohun Bagan in its historic win against an English football club in 1911.

The same report states that Agra Ka Daabra stars the Vicky Donor lead pair Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam. However, both films have been delayed as Sircar is still improvising on the scripts.
