Rensil D’Silva’s new film, Ungli is yet another film that’s hoping to cash in on our long-standing love of watching film stars take on the big, bad system. The film is about a group of five friends (Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Randeep Hooda, Neil Bhoopalam and Angad Bedi) who become vigilantes. Take a look at the trailer here:
Everyone who has ever tried to get an auto rickshaw in Mumbai will sympathise with Hashmi’s rage and cheer for how he deals with the intransigent auto rickshaw driver, even though trussing the poor driver up and dispatching him to Delhi by train may seem a bit harsh. Although Ungli is set in Mumbai, auto rickshaws all over the country have a tendency to be staggeringly unhelpful and their constant rejections may well have caused in us potential customers a particular strain of self-esteem issues related to three-wheelers. It could be a psychological issue of epidemic proportions that isn’t being noticed because films like Ungli are allowing us to act out our urges vicariously. A politician discovers his walls have been papered over with posters that show an upright middle finger. There are a couple of explosions, YouTube video messages to cops (which unfortunately have disturbing resonances with ISIS video missives) and Hashmi trying to look in a black hoodie. Enter Sanjay Dutt, as a super cop who predictably likes breaking bottles and heads. Can Dutt catch Hashmi and gang or will the vigilantes win over the cop to their side? Will Randeep Hooda have anything to do other than sound growly? Is Kangana Ranaut the film’s official eye candy? Hashmi is quite obviously the hero of the piece and he does make the trailer look exciting. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that there’s more of Ranaut and Hooda in the actual film. D’Silva has previously written screenplays for films like Student of the Year, Rang De Basanti and Kurbaan, which he also directed_._ Produced by Dharma Productions, Ungli is slated to release on 28 November, 2014.
