Shahid Kapoor gets a thumbs up from father Pankaj Kapur for his performance in Rangoon
The last time Shahid Kapoor managed to get a positive feedback from Pankaj Kapur was also in a Vishal Bhardwaj film - Haider
Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj held a special screening of his upcoming period war drama Rangoon for a select few in order to get some early reviews. Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur was one of them. Besides having a 'family-like' equation with Bhardwaj, Pankaj had another reason to watch the film - his son Shahid Kapoor is the lead actor of the film.
Pankaj has collaborated with Bhardwaj in three films - Maqbool, The Blue Umbrella and Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola.
India.com reports that when Pankaj came out of the screening, he was pleasantly surprised by Shahid's performance. He claimed that Shahid was so immersed in the character that Pankaj forgot that he was looking at his son on the screen. He could not distinguish Shahid from his character of a soldier during the Second World War.
Shahid was on cloud 9 after receiving this feedback, as reported by Hindustan Times. He pointed out that his father is very frugal with his kind words as he observes the nuances of cinema minutely and is brutally honest about his feedback. Interestingly, Pankaj has also directed his son in the romantic epic Mausam back in 2011, which bombed at the box office.
The same report states that the last time Shahid got such a positive feedback from Pankaj was also in a Bhardwaj film three years ago - Haider, which also fetched him his first Filmfare Award for the Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Now that Pankaj has lauded Shahid's nuanced portrayal in Rangoon, it remains to be seen whether the critics and the box-office will second with the seasoned actor.
Rangoon is the third collaboration of Shahid with Bhardwaj after Kaminey and Haider. It also stars Kangana Ranaut and Saif Ali Khan. It is slated to release on 24 February.
