Sanjay Dutt runs out of options, will surrender today

Actor Sanjay Dutt is expected  to surrender before the TADA court in Mumbai  on Thursday, in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. The move comes after Dutt withdrew his application seeking to surrender before the Yerwada jail in Pune instead of giving himself up before the special court in south Mumbai. Dutt had earlier filed an application in the TADA court, hours after the Supreme Court refused to grant him additional time to surrender for undergoing the remaining jail term in the  case. Reuters[/caption] The Supreme Court had in March upheld Dutt’s conviction under the Arms Act for possessing an AK-56 rifle, although his sentence was reduced to five years from the earlier six years. Since Dutt has already served 18 months of his term, he will have to serve only the additional three and a half years. According to reports, while in prison, Dutt will likely be assigned the task of cooking for the prison inmates. During his previous prison term, he had been assigned carpentry work. For his prison exertions, the man who has earned crores of rupees from the films he has acted in, will be paid Rs 25 per day. In addition, he will receive an allowance of Rs 1,500 from his family. Dutt will be allowed to meet a maximum of five people from his family in a month - but only for 20 minutes. On the eve of Dutt’s surrender, several Bollywood personalities met him at his residence and expressed solidarity with him. Among those who stopped by at h is residence wwere actors Abhishek Bachchan and Ajay Devgn, directors David Dhawan and Sanjay Gupta, actor Shilpa Shetty’s husband Raj Kundra (with whom Dutt started Super Fight League) and director Apoorva Lakhia (with whom Dutt worked in `Zanjeer’ remake). There was heavy police security outside Dutt’s residence, with over 20 policemen and three police vans stnding by. Members of the Hindu Rashtra Sena, a right-wing outfit, staged a demonstration outside Dutt’s residence demanding that he be sent to prison without any VIP treatment. Dhananjay Desai, the outfit’s chief, and others were arrested by Khar police and later released on bail, their lawyer Navin Chomal said. With agency inputs
