Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar among highest advance taxpayers; Kapil Sharma, Alia Bhatt new entrants
Other celebrities in the top 10 taxpayers from the industry include Aamir Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Karan Johar, Deepika Padukone, Kareena and Hrithik Roshan.
The advance taxpayers list is out and Hindi cinema has its fair share of celebrities in it. Advance tax is paid if the tax liability, after Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), on the estimated income is likely to likely to exceed Rs 10,000 in the financial year.
Salman Khan has emerged as the highest taxpayer of the industry. The Indian Express reports that he paid an advance tax of Rs 44.5 crore, 39% higher than that of last year, Rs 32 crore, thanks to his film, Ali Abbas Zafar's sports drama Sultan which garnered over Rs 500 crore worldwide.
Akshay Kumar, renowned in the industry for managing his expenses well, is on the second spot. He paid an advance tax of Rs 29.5 crore, marginally less than that of last year, Rs 30 crore. Kumar had three Rs 100 crore club films in the financial year, Tinu Suresh Desai's period drama Rustom, Sajid-Farhad's comedy Houseful 3 and most recently, Subhash Kapoor's courtroom drama Jolly LLB 2.
Hrithik Roshan landed next as he paid Rs 25.5 crore. Though he had a box office disaster in Ashutosh Gowariker's period drama Mohenjo Daro, he recently made up for that with Sanjay Gupta's revenge saga Kaabil, that crossed the Rs 100 crore mark domestically. He paid Rs 14 crore as advance tax last year.
Next in the line is a surprise entry, Kapil Sharma. He paid an advance tax of Rs 23.39 crore, an astounding 241% of that of last year, Rs 7 crore. Interestingly, he had a run in with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for demolition of certain illegal portions of his property.
Ranbir Kapoor paid of Rs 16.5 crore, who witnessed a dip in his advance tax of last year, Rs 22.3 crore, as reported by India Today. This dip was despite his box office hit, Karan Johar's romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
Aamir Khan features next at Rs 14.8 crore, 54% more than that of last year at Rs 9.6 crore. Since he did not have a film release last year as opposed to Nitiesh Tiwari's sports biopic Dangal this year, the jump is evident. However, the percentage of release seems quite less since his production Dangal earned over Rs 700 crore worldwide.
Karan Johar is the only filmmaker in the 10 highest advance taxpaying celebrities of the industry. He paid Rs 11.7 crore, as opposed to Rs 2 crore last year. His multiple television shows and three hits in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, as director, and Dear Zindagi and Kapoor & Sons, as producer, explain the highest increase of 473%.
Deepika Padukone is the highest female taxpayer in the list with an advance tax of Rs 10.25 crore, recording a 13% increase from Rs 9 crore last year. Though she did not have any Hindi release this year, she made her Hollywood debut with DJ Caruso's action entertainer xXx: Return of Xander Cage.
Alia Bhatt, who was the reigning box office queen this year, paid Rs 4.33 crore as opposed to Rs 2,9 crore, recording a rise of 46%. She scored three blockbusters this financial year in Shakun Batra's family drama Kapoor & Sons, Gauri Shinde's slice-of-life film Dear Zindagi and Abhishek Chaubey's Udta Punjab.
Kareena Kapoor Khan, despite her pregnancy and motherhood, also made it to the list. She paid an advance tax of Rs 3.9 crore. She saw a 44% dip from last year when she paid Rs 7 crore.
The above 10 highest taxpayers' list does not take into consideration the advance tax numbers of Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan as they are under investigation in the Panama Papers leak case.
