The trailer of Ranbir Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez and Arjun Rampal starrer Roy is out and it seems to be a sleekly shot film.
Vikramjit Singh, the director of Roy, had said that Roy will be a crowd-pleaser with plenty of action and drama. The trailer has a lot of dramatic music, but it doesn’t look like an edge-of-the-seat entertainer and considering how much of the story has been revealed in just three-odd minutes, we wonder what further twists are left in Singh’s tale.
Still, what Roy lacks in the suspense department, it makes up for with style. Kapoor, Rampal and Fernandez look gorgeous, as do the locations. Fernandez with her coral lips, dark shades and floral scarves gives the vintage glamour of Jackie O a contemporary spin. Kapoor, with his shirts and cardigans, is a little bit like our desi Cary Grant. Rampal is seen in a variety of looks – with a beard, without a beard, with a Fedora, in a suit, cigarette dangling from the corner of his lips. And it all looks sexy, even when it makes no sense (who on earth uses an old-fashioned typewriter, in Malaysia, in 2014? And why?).

Singh’s film is about Roy (Kapoor), who happens to be a thief. Kapoor’s role has been described as ‘a dynamic role’ in the trailer, which we suspect is code for him seeming like a bad guy but turning out to be the good guy, or the other way round. We’re hoping there are darker details that will surface in the film because at present, Roy looks as cute as a kitten and incapable of pulling off anything even remotely criminal.
With his Cadillac and languid elegance, Roy radiates cool and it’s not surprising that film director Kabir (Rampal) becomes fascinated by Roy and wants to make a film on the thief. Into this mix comes Fernandez, who has a double role in the film. She’s both Ayesha, a filmmaker, and Tia, an art director. This is by far the most challenging assignment Fernandez has scored in her Bollywood career and it remains to be seen whether she will be able to hold her own next to her co-actors. Her Hindi accent sounds slightly better than Katrina Kaif’s and she appears to have more facial expressions than Nargis Fakhri, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed.
Rampal seems very much in his comfort zone as Kabir, the Casanova filmmaker who has, we are informed, had 23 girlfriends in past. The chemistry between him and Fernandez also seems crackling. It’s the first major role that Rampal has had in a while. In fact, even though Kapoor is the headliner, Rampal is apparently the hero of the film. In an interview this September, Kapoor told Bollywood life , “I am just play a supporting role (in Roy). So I want to make it clear ‘coz people are saying that I am grabbing the headlines. I am part of the film but it stars Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline Fernandez.”
Roy’s music has been composed by Ankit Tiwari. Directed by debutant Vikramjit Singh and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Roy is slated to release on February 13, 2015.
