Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt confirmed for Zoya Akhtar's next film, Gully Boy
After being in talks with Ranveer Singh for the lead role, Excel Entertainment has confirmed their leading lady for Zoya Akhtar's film, none other than Alia Bhatt.
It was earlier reported that Ranveer Singh was in talks with Zoya Akhtar, for her next film.
The film, tentatively titled Gully Boy, will graph Singh as an underdog from the streets of Mumbai who rises to the top as a city rapper. And now, Excel entertainment has confirmed the leading lady of their film, none other than Alia Bhatt.

Ranveer's role is modelled upon Mumbai-based rappers Naezy and Divine, who also came out with an anthem for Mumbai, titled 'Mere Gully Mein'. Both have gone on to work with All India Bakch*d and bass king Nucleya, after having started out as 'gully' rappers from the slums of Mumbai. The film is currently in the scripting stage (helmed by Akhtar and Talaash directed Reema Kagti).
While there was news that Ranveer had opted out of the film, and Varun Dhawan may be signed on, this tweet by Excel confirms the pairing. Akhtar had spoken about her film in this Firstpost interview earlier, "Yes, my next film is inspired by real life street rappers. I watched these kids on the Net and they just blew my mind. I didn’t know that this kind of music was coming out of the lanes and by-lanes of Mumbai. People are so consumed with listening to just film music that nobody pays attention to some serious talent on the streets. That is how it all started."
It's not the first time that these two actors will share screen. They have worked on a series of ads for Make My Trip, where they played a bunch of quirky characters. Fans of the two immensely talented actors have been waiting for them to paired together in a film. Thank you, Zoya Akhtar.
