Randeep Hooda says he didn't know who Gurmehar Kaur was; here's her sassy reply
Randeep Hooda says that he laughed at Virender Sehwag's joke in isolation. He adds that the issue was blown out of proportion and he was unjustly termed as a bully.
On Wednesday evening, actor Randeep Hooda said he should have been careful with his tweet related to Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur.
The Lady Sri Ram College student, daughter of army martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, had launched a viral social media campaign against Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the BJP's student wing.
She got caught up in a Twitter war with ex-cricketer Virendra Sehwag and Hooda, who called her a "political pawn".
When asked to clarify his tweet, Hooda told Firstpost, "“The issue was blown out of proportion. But I realised that I should have been careful because of the environment that exists in our country vis-a-vis women. I saw Sehwag's tweet... I often laugh on his jokes. I laughed at the joke in isolation."
Hooda said, being an actor, he is often trolled on social media but for Kaur, it must have been traumatic.
"It seems to me that we are not having a conversation anymore. We tend to get abusive while trolling. You can have your point of view and you can disagree. It's a democracy. Whether it's a man or a woman, it's wrong to troll. It's a crime and you can not threaten a woman on social media or anywhere else. It has to be addressed. The social media head of India should look into it as it's becoming a major issue."
The actor said he was not aware of any threats which were given to Kaur when he tweeted, which were taken out of context and eventually people started labeling him as a bully.
"I laughed at the joke in isolation, it wasn’t connected or directed at Gurmehar. I didn’t know who she was in first place. I didn't know the connotation of it. I started getting messages and some prominent journalists were commenting on it. I quickly went back on Twitter and saw what's happening."
To this, Gurmehar Kaur responded on Twitter.
