Reuters[/caption] Released in 1986, the action drama is considered as one of the most iconic movies. The film also cemented Tom Cruise’s status as Hollywood’s top stars. Cruise played Lieutenant Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, a young Naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, in the film. Speaking at a Terminator Genisys press event, the 32-year-old producer confirmed that the project is in development and hinted that Cruise, 52, will reprise his role, reported Variety. “There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick , and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick,” he said. Revealing the plot details Ellision said that sequel to the blockbuster hit is set in the world we live in right now. The script of the sequel also plans to incorporate ‘real use of time’ from the first movie which effectively means Maverick will pick up 30 years after the last time audiences saw him taking flight, reports BGR “Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into right now. It’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters… It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is at the moment,” he said. The 2012 death of Top Gun director Tony Scott had stalled the sequel for two years. With agency inputs
