Mumbai: After gaining major appreciation at film festivals around the world, the Irrfan Khan starrer Qissa has finally been given an Indian release date. The Punjabi film has been given a theatrical release date thanks to PVR Director’s Rare. It will run in cinemas from September 26. The news was announced on Twitter by the head of PVR Director’s Rare, Shiladitya Bora. The movie features Irrfan Khan, Tillotama Shome, Rasika Duggal and Tisca Chopra in pivotal roles. It narrates the complicated tale of a young girl who is raised as a boy.  Qissa is backed by the National Film Development Corporation and has been screened at various film festivals including Toronto International Film Festival, Mumbai Film Festival, Abu Dhabi International Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam and Curacao International Film Festival. In July this year, Khan and Shome, who play father and daughter in the movie, were named the best actors at the International Film Festival of Queensland (IFFQ) in Australia. The director of the film, Anup Singh, also won the award for the best director. The film is set during the post-Partition era and focuses on the life of a Sikh man called Umber Singh and his family. It explores the family’s displacement from Pakistan to India and Umber Singh’s subsequent obsessive desire for a male heir. After his wife delivers the couple’s fourth baby girl, Singh decides to treat his last child as a boy despite the fact that she is born as a girl. IANS
