The television and radio regulator across the border, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, has announced a ban on all Indian channels there from Saturday, 1 October.

Cable operators who continue to broadcast Indian channels have been warned that strict action will be taken against them if they fail to comply with the ban.

On Friday, a group of Pakistani theatre owners announced that they would be boycotting Indian films until the current bilateral tensions eased.

Atrium Cinemas, Centaurus and Super Cinemas were among the theatre chains that announced they would not be screening Indian films in the present scenario.

other chains, like Cinepax, had not yet reached a decision on whether or not they would abide by the (at present, voluntary) ban.

However, on Friday, calls to ban all Indian content — not just publicly screened films — grew. A boycott of DVDs from India as well as Indian TV shows was demanded by certain quarters.

The PEMRA move regarding Indian channels come as the Indian Motion Pictures Producers' Association announced a ban on all Pakistani artistes and technicians working in India.

Prior to that, Dr Subhash Chandra Goel, the chairman of Zee, announced that the network would be pulling all Pakistani shows off air from its Zindagi channel. Zindagi has broadcast some of the most successful Pakistani TV serials, such as Zindagi Gulzar Hai and Humsafar, in India since its inception.
