Believe it or not the beloved dragons of Game of Thrones were made in Mumbai. Yup, Goregaon to be specific.
According to Quartz India , the Indian subsidiary of Prana Studios—a 3D, visual effects and animation company that is based in Los Angeles—developed the three dragons for HBO’s Game of Thrones season five’s penultimate episode.
The 800 strong team based out of their Goregaon office in Mumbai comprising of animators, designers and visual artists helped piece together one of the best scenes from this season of the widely-watched show.
Prana Studios Inc, which was founded in 2003 by Arish Fyzee, Kristin Dornig and Pankaj Gunsagar, is backed by a group of investors including Anand Mahindra and Mukesh Ambani.
“We are delighted to have been early-stage investors in Prana Studios. This bold move will make them animation, VFX leaders with global delivery capability and will substantially increase the scale and complexity of their work,” Mahindra said in 2013 to PTI.
Drogon, one of Khaleesi’s so-called children, spews fire and comes roaring into to rescue the Mother of dragons from assassins. The black dragon eats people, attacks the assassins and flies away with Daenerys on his back. That however was shot in a studio.
The visual effects team is also credited with Life of Pi, The Golden Compass and Babe.
