After watching the trailer and two songs from Bang Bang, we have safely concluded that director Siddharth Anand had only one directive to the costume department: do not give Hrithik Roshan a shirt and if you have to give him a shirt, make sure it has no buttons. The video for the title track of Bang Bang is further proof of this directorial note. Gentlemen, if you’d prefer to have something else to ogle at, allow us to point out that Katrina Kaif’s legs are also on display, thought not as much as Roshan’s torso.
It might be a good idea to wear sunglasses while watching this video because the lights reflecting off Roshan’s bronzed chest and abs may well be injurious to one’s health otherwise. Maybe the reason we’re getting the songs one by one is to slowly acclimatise our eyes to this level of shine, which, from the look of things, will be sustained throughout the film. We are guessing that the budget approved for buying bronzer in Bang Bang could have paid the entire tax of any small European nation. Perhaps that’s why the costume department got short-changed and as a result, Kaif’s skirts are barely there and Roshan’s shirts are, well, not there at all. A screengrab from youtube[/caption] Leaving aside the mysterious case of missing shirt buttons and shrinking hemlines, it looks like Kaif was denied a professional make-up artist. Little else explains the blue eye-shadow, nude lips and red nail paint combo. In general, Kaif seems to have got the short end of the stick in Bang Bang. There’s nary a sound byte from her. In the songs, she’s essentially a prop for Roshan and in this particular video, it looks like Roshan went so far as to claim her wardrobe as his own. That’s the only explanation we can think of, for which the actor was compelled to wear a floral print, sheer, white shirt, sans buttons but with tassels. Apparently, this video is Roshan’s tribute to his dance idol, Michael Jackson. In an interview to
The Indian Express
, he had said, “I love his style and energy! So, when Bosco (choreographer) and Sid (director Siddharth Anand) said ‘Michael Jackson’, at first I thought there’s no way I could match up, but then I reframed that and did it for my love for him in my own style, my own way.” However, if this video is any indication, it seems Bosco, the choreographer, changed him mind at the last moment and instead of paying tribute to the king of pop he decided to remember the glorious days of Farah Khan, when she use to be a good choreographer. The only five seconds of the video in while we see Roshan dance reminds us more of Ek Pal Ka Jeena than any other dance choreography of Jackson. However, Roshan seems very happy to don the signature bowler hat that Jackson often wore. Still, we have to admit that the few moments of actual dancing that Roshan does is still a sight to behold (provided you haven’t been blinded by the flashing lights by then). While we leave it on you to decide whether this video is Roshan’s tribute to the king of pop or not, we can tell you it is mostly definitely Katrina Kaif’s tribute to old Liril advertisement. Or did Anand hand over the responsibility of editing the video to a teenager with a Macbook? Or is this Bollywood’s answer to the Rorschach test? The truth will only be revealed on 2 October when Bang Bang hits the threatres. [caption id=“attachment_1718249” align=“aligncenter” width=“620”]
Hrithik Roshan and well, Hrithik Roshan.[/caption]
