What do most Salman Khan solo songs have in common?

There is a huge and elaborate set, there are numerous background dancers, the props are larger than life and the music is foot-tapping, even if the lyrics make little sense. Be it the Tera hi Jalwa from Wanted, Hudd Hudd Dabangg or Pandey Jee from the the Dabangg series.

So it comes as no surprise that the first song from Salman’s upcoming film Bajrangi Bhaijaan  is an elaborate song-and-dance number that appears to introduce the film’s titular character. What comes as a surprise is the lyrics and context of the song — Salman singing ‘Selfie le le re’ at a procession of Hanuman devotees.

The song begins with several establishing shots of Salman complete with the ‘Hanuman’s mace’ neck piece that was featured prominently in the posters. Then there is colour flying everywhere and little children dressed as Hanuman jumping around, musicians beating drums and people dancing on the street in front of a huge idol of the deity.

We won’t blame you if you mistake it for Tera hi Jalwa at first, the only difference is that this song has a Hanuman idol, while in the other one it was an idol of Ganpati.

Then begins the trademark Salman moves, which sometimes resemble dance, but mostly consist ‘bhai’ shaking legs like he was shivering and gesticulating to music. But coupled with the foot-tapping beats by Pritam and the upbeat vocals of Vishal Dadlani, the ‘Le le le re le le re’ chorus begins to sound catchy.

Till a guy dressed as Hanuman comes up to bhai and says, ‘A chal beta selfie le le re.’ After that, the song is a series of selfies that Salman takes with the Hanumans, random people and even a guy dressed as Raavan with 10 heads while ‘Chal beta selfie le le re’ plays in the background. Yes, as we said, the song title and context are very loosely tied together. Fun fact: Even Salman Khan has the same frozen face that most of us make while taking a selfie!

And as expected, the female lead Kareena Kapoor Khan does not make an appearance in the video released, because it all about Bajrangi Bhaijaan after all.

Overall, we can predict that the song is going to be high up on the charts for its music and may spawn an even crazier selfie phase. But it is nothing we have not seen Bhai do before.
