Aishwaryaa R Dhanush performs Bharatnatyam at UN, gets criticised for her caricaturist act
Aishwaryaa R Dhanush is the UN Ambassador for Gender Equality but it was alleged that her performance at the UN was a result of nepotism and political power
Rajinikanth's daughter and actor Dhanush's wife Aishwaryaa, a trained Bharatnatyam dancer, performed the classical dance at the United Nations (UN) on the occasion of International Women's Day.
Aishwaryaa was appointed as the UN Ambassador for Gender Equality last year. Her performance was attended by top UN diplomats and leaders. India TV reports that she performed 'Bho Sambho', a song in honour of Natraj, the Lord of Dance.
The event marked the first time a celebrity dancer from Tamil Nadu performed at the event. The act was made possible by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN. However, the same report states that her 'awkward' performance prompted many to question why a better dancer did not represent India on the global stage.
They alleged that the only reason Aishwaryaa made it to the UN stage was because of political affiliation and nepotism. While she is the daughter of a megastar and the wife of a star, she is a filmmaker in her own right. She made her directorial debut with the 2012 thriller 3, starring Dhanush. She directed another thriller in 2015 titled, Vai Raja Vai.
Aishwaryaa is also a playback singer and the recipient of the Kalaimamani award for Dance from the Tamil Nadu government. However, her performance evoked extreme reactions on Twitter.
