Ae Dil Hai Mushkil teaser shows it's 'game on' versus Shivaay at the box office
The Ae Dil Hai Mushkil teaser and the overwhelming response to it had made it clear that the film's clash with Ajay Devgn's Shivaay at the box office will not be one-sided
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil's teaser and posters were released on 30 August, and what we've seen makes it clear that in the box office battle with Ajay Devgn's Shivaay, it's now game on!
So far the ADHM vs Shivaay clash was being perceived as one-sided with the latter releasing one of the most-talked-about trailers (watch it here), garnering a huge amount of views. On the other hand, the radio silence over ADHM and the shaky wicket Ranbir Kapoor's career has been of late, made it seem as though this Karan Johar film would have an uphill struggle ahead.
The teaser for ADHM has, however, changed those perceptions.
What has drawn a lot of attention apart from the picturesque locations (London, Paris, Vienna), stunning photography, captivating music, powerful lyrics and aspirational wardrobe, is ADHM’s high-voltage, intense romantic drama — and the guessing game. Johar, who returns to direction after almost four years, has been guarding the secrets of this film with his life as he told the media a few months ago, "I can't reveal much. Nobody knows who's with who." The teaser makes you very, very curious.
And then of course, there is Ranbir Kapoor.
Of late, he may have been joking about his string of commercial box office failures and the much-delayed Jagga Jasoos and putting up a brave front, but the Kapoor scion is hoping to bounce back with this romantic saga.
And he's pulling out all the stops to do so: Ranbir hooks you with his intensity and vulnerability and stands out in every frame for the few seconds that you see him, be it opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anushka Sharma or Fawad Khan.
The support from Anushka (the current box office darling after Sultan crossed the Rs 300-crore mark) and Fawad will certainly hold Ranbir in good stead.
While Karan Johar hasn't said anything about the impending clash for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil with Shivaay, Ajay Devgn has said: "The clash doesn't matter, it really doesn't matter. (Yes) a solo release is always a solo release. (But) I'm more concerned about what I am doing. I'm not concerned about what others are doing."
Shivaay and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil are of course, very different films: While Shivaay is an action adventure mounted on a huge scale, ADHM is an emotional story about love and loss, which means that the audience for both will not be overlapping much.
Now which one of these two will be able to pull a larger chunk of moviegoers to the theatre will only be known post-Diwali. But the audience is definitely spoilt for choice this festive season.
