Going after a wrongdoer mindlessly is also not a smart thing to do.

Tehelka case: Should blood lust dictate a public discourse?

Editor’s note: This is a reader comment we got on the live copy, “ Live: I have the anger seething in me, says unapologetic Jolly ” today. ss laments how the quality of public discourse is increasingly hitting the nadir in the Indian media. As per Firstpost policy, we have lightly edited for grammar and spelling, but the comment has been left as it is. By ss [caption id=“attachment_1255801” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Going bonkers on TV. Reuters](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/cabletv380.jpg) Going bonkers on TV. Reuters[/caption] We need to think what kind of society we are creating. While every wrong doer deserves to be punished as per the law of the land, the savagery that the self appointed custodians of public morality display in attacking the wrong doer needs to be tempered. What does it say about me as a human being if the only thing that will satisfy me is the complete destruction of an individual. The blood thirsty TV anchors and their pompous panelists who pontificate on sins of others on prime time television only serve to bring out what a dehumanised, debased people we are fast becoming. The idea that the wrong doer must be stripped of all vestiges of dignity and publicly maimed by a relentless barrage of invective and abuse reflects poorly on those baying for blood. It will be sad day for the nation when public discourse is driven by nothing other than blood lust.
