As a Consular official Devyani held the responsibility of representing her country in the US.
Her’s was not an act of ignorance, it was a planned act of malafide intent. I think rather than US, India should be the one prosecuting her for lying about the Visa documents. However, these people are born out of the “laal batti” culture who believe it is their right to exploit those from lower strata of the society.
I have stayed in the US for many years, earned multiple times more than what she did but could not afford a maid, so did not have one.
I have heard some in Indian media raised the ridiculous argument, “how can she pay, more than what she earned”. In that case, don’t keep a maid. Do your own work. It is not that difficult.
Meanwhile please spare a the poor girl, who would be terrified to face these “big people”. I wonder when the Indian media will side with the poor?
