German car-maker Volkswagen seems to be all set to launch its new Tiguan SUV in India next year. Showcased first at the 2016 Auto Expo, the company imported the SUV to India for testing purposes a couple of months back. Thanks to Performance Factory, we now have a glimpse as to how the SUV will look as a some spy shots of the car have emerged, and yes without camouflage. The new Tiguan is built on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, which is also present on the Skoda Kodiaq and Audi’s upcoming Q2 crossover both of which will be making their debut in India next year. The imported unit that came to India featured a 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine. There is a high possibility that it is the same as the one seen in these spy shots. The engine will have the capability to churn out a maximum of 147bhp and 340Nm of torque. The 1968cc motor will come with a turbocharger with the company’s 7-speed DSG automatic unit. The global variant of the Tiguan also offers a 2.0-litre TSI, 4-cylinder petrol engine in a variety of power options including 123bhp, 147bhp, 177bhp, and 217bhp. We doubt that Volkswagen will bring the petrol variants at the time of launch. The new Tiguan is also 60mm longer, 30mm wider and sits 33mm lower than the previous generation. The wheelbase has also increased by 77mm to a total of 2681mm, increasing the space on the inside. So technically it is a bit larger then its predecessor, but is 50kgs lighter than before. In terms of styling, the Indian version of the Tiguan will look exactly the same as the international version. So you can expect projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights, a sculpted front bumper with a wide central air dam, two smaller air intakes on either side and horizontal LED fog lamps. Depending on the variants, the SUV will come equipped with a 5-inch or a bigger 8-inch infotainment display loaded with navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink and other services. Other features include front assist with city emergency braking, pedestrian monitoring, automatic post-collision braking system and lane assist. The Volkswagen Tiguan also scored a 5-star rating at the Euro NCAP crash test. The new Tiguan could take the CBU route since the production of the car is no happening in India so we can expect a price range of Rs 30 lakhs and above. Considering the price range, Volkswagen could see a bit of difficulty in selling the SUV as the new Ford Endeavour or even the Toyota Fortuner come at a cheaper price range.
