We reported last week that Volkswagen is all set to launch a more powerful version of the Polo in India. The limited edition Polo GTI is now available for pre-booking and Volkswagen has only opened it for the first 99 people. This could also mean that only 99 units of the fast paced hatchback are coming to India, although we don’t have a confirmation.
The German car maker had showcased the Polo GTI at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo back in February. The company had started teasing for the launch of the GTI last week and it seems that the deliveries could be later this month or early December.
The Volkswagen Polo GTI will be faster than the current Polo GT that is available in India. It will be powered by a 1.8-litre TSI engine which will be mated with a 7–speed DSG gearbox. The hot hatch is claimed to go from 0-100 km/h in just 7.2 seconds. The GTI offers a 189Hp motor with top speeds going up to a blistering 233 km/h, which is crazy especially for Indian roads.
The Polo GTI comes in two variants, a 3-door version and a 5-door version. India is expected to get the three-door variant first followed by the 5-door version later next year. Prices are expected to go as much as Rs 25 lakhs so if you’re planning to buy this hot-hatch, it won’t be cheap. With that pricing, the Polo GTI will be competing against performance hatchbacks from Mini (BMW) and Fiat. The company recently launched the Polo AllStar Special Edition in India as an offering this festive season.
