Supreme Court to examine plea to ban diesel vehicles in Delhi

With  the trial period for the odd-even formula getting the green light in Delhi , the Supreme Court has now agreed to examine a plea to completely ban the use of diesel cars in Delhi. The bench, headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur, will decide next Tuesday on whether or not there will be complete ban on diesel vehicles in the city, or if they should somehow restrict the number of diesel vehicles running in the city. The bench was more in favour of imposing a ban on all trucks passing through Delhi.

The bench stated that just one approach to tackle the pollution problem in the city would not be enough and called for a multi-pronged policy which could include collecting toll and environment compensation charge (ECC). The court also asked the Delhi government to provide the local municipal bodies, Central Pollution Control Board and others with a platform to come up with short-term, medium-term and log-term policies to help with the issue.A
