Mercedes-Benz has released images of the S-Class Cabriolet ahead of its world premiere at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The S-Class Cabriolet will premiere alongside its high-performance sibling, the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet. Mercedes claim that the S-Class Cabriolet weighs almost as much as the Coupe, thanks to its aluminium rear floor and the luggage compartment bulkhead that is made of aluminium and magnesium.

The S-Class Cabriolet can be ordered with the optional Swarovski Crystal turn signals and daytime running lamps. Mercedes say that the three layer acoustic soft-top is designed to minimise wind noise. This soft-top is available in black, dark blue, beige and dark red. It can be opened while driving below 60kmph and also remotely using the electronic key. The S-Class Cabriolet also features the company’s Aircap wind protection system as standard. This system uses a wind deflector with a net set into the roof frame and an extendable draft-stop behind the rear seats to reduce turbulence inside the car.

Another standard feature will be Mercedes’ Airscarf neck-level heating system. This system circulates warm air around the neck and head of the passenger through the head restraints which should allow for open-top driving even in cold weather conditions. The S-Class Cabriolet will also get Mercedes’ Thermotronic automatic climate control system that automatically detects climatic conditions using 12 sensors and 18 actuators.

On the safety front, the S-Class Cabriolet gets features like the Pre-safe brake with pedestrian detection, Distronic Plus with steering assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, to name a few. The car also features a Pre-safe Plus system that on detection of rear-end collision, warns traffic by flashing the rear hazard warning lights. The system also locks the brakes and activates the belt tensioners to reduce the chance of whiplash injuries. In case of the vehicle rolling over, the roll bars are extended using a gas generator instead of springs.

When the S-Class Cabriolet’s soft-top is opened, it folds into the luggage compartment and is separated from the rest of the compartment by a retractable cover. When the soft-top is closed, the partition can be retracted by pressing a button to provide more room.

The S 500 Cabriolet will run a 4.7-litre V8 engine that makes 455PS and 699Nm of torque, mated to Mercedes’ 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic transmission. The Cabriolet is also fitted with the Airmatic semi-active air suspension as standard. Its AMG sibling, the S 63 Cabriolet, will use a 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine that makes 585PS and 900Nm of torque and is coupled with the AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed transmission. The AMG will get a rear-biased 4Matic all-wheel drive system that helps with its claimed 0-100kmph time of 3.9 seconds.

“After 44 years, we are once again able to offer Mercedes aficionados an open-top car in the S-Class. The new S-Class Cabriolet symbolises our passion for individual and timelessly exclusive mobility, which we share with our customers,” said Ola Källenius, board member of Daimler AG.
