Mahindra SUV codenamed U301 to be launched in India as the TUV300

The latest brand to jump onto the compact-SUV bandwagon is Mahindra. The SUV, codenamed U301, was spied testing last year . The sub-4m car looks like it’s built on the lines of the Bolero but is based on an all-new platform, says Mahindra.

The Mahindra TUV300 will be powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder mHawk engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. While Mahindra claims that the TUV300 will be a ’true SUV’ and not just a soft-roader, it will not be launched with 4WD.

The TUV300 looks boxier and obviously, more compact than the Bolero " a hot seller in the market (around 5,000 units of the Mahindra Bolero are sold every month). Pawan Goenka, executive director, M&M Ltd said, “Today, Mahindra has the strongest equity in the SUV segment in India. In our ongoing automotive journey, we identified a need for a tough, bold and masculine SUV and our customer clinics have confirmed that the TUV300 delivers on these parameters. I am confident that the Mahindra TUV300 will follow in the footsteps of its illustrious predecessors to evolve into an iconic brand for Mahindra”.

The TUV300 will be manufactured at Mahindra’s Chakan plant and is slated for a September 2015 launch.
