General Motors has suspended operations at its all-electric Factory Zero in Detroit. The shutdown is expected to last till 13th April. General Motors has been grappling with weaker-than-expected demand for battery-powered vehicles. Beyond the sudden stop in the production process, some 1300 workers are reported to have been affected by the temporary stoppage.
A GM spokesperson told Detroit Free Press that, “Factory ZERO will temporarily adjust production to align EV production with market demand.”
The Detroit plant in question is known for churning out models such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV and Hummer EV. Both the models have witnessed erratic output over the past year, as the firm wrestles with minimal consumer interest in electric models. A subdued rate of demand for EV vehicles had pushed General Motors to slash production at the site roughly by half in January, moving to a single shift from 5 January, leaving close to 1200 workers on an indefinite layoff process.
This pause is one of the latest blows to GM’s electric ambitions. The company has already absorbed $7.6 billion in write-downs tied to its EV programmes and joins a growing list of manufacturers scaling back on electrification targets. Witnessing a slower-than-expected demand, the industry’s attention is shifting back to petrol-powered trucks and SUVs. General Motors’ pivot to produce petrol-powered vehicles is evident with a ramp-up in heavy-duty pickup production at its Flint facility.
Beyond General Motors’ rollback on the production, other manufacturers such as Honda have also stepped back from their EV commitments. Honda has halted the development of the electric Acura RDX and the Honda 0 sedan and SUV, three models that were the company’s first ground-up EVs. The decision was also impacted by the abolition of US tax incentives for EV purchases and the easing of fossil fuel regulations, as well as a decline in the competitiveness of its products in Asia. Honda has forecast an expected loss of around 2.5 trillion in the current fiscal year.
