2015 Frankfurt Motor Show: Bentley unveils the Bentayga SUV
The Bentayga will run a new 6-litre twin-turbo W12, capable of 608PS and 900Nm
Bentley have unveiled their first ever SUV that will hit the market in 2016, the Bentayga. It will make its public debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show this month. The Bentayga, will run a new 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 TSI engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that powers all four wheels. This engine makes 608PS and 900Nm of torque and Bentley say that the SUV will go from 0 to 100kmph in just 4.1 seconds. They also claim that the Bentayga can hit a top speed of 301kmph. Diesel and hybrid variants of the Bentayga will be available in the future.
The new W12 uses a combination of direct and indirect fuel injection to increase refinement and improve power and torque delivery while delivering low particulate emissions. Bentley claim an 11.9 per cent increase in efficiency in the new W12 compared to the current available powertrains in their other cars. To achieve such figures, the Bentayga gets Bentley’s Variable Displacement system, which shuts down six of its 12 cylinders when not required. This means the engine runs as a six-pot for better efficiency. Additionally, the Bentayga also gets a start-stop system and a coasting function.
The Bentayga can be ordered in either a four- or five-seat configuration. It will feature a full-length panoramic sunroof and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system linked to a 60GB hard drive. The rear-seat passengers get the Bentley Entertainment Tablet, which is a 10.2-inch Android device with 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities. The Bentayga is offered with the optional 1,950W 18-speaker audio system called, Naim for Bentley Premium Audio.
The Bentley Bentayga can be personalised to suite the customer’s tastes. The standard paint palette consists of 17 colours with 90 shades available in the extended range. The carpets are offered with 15 options just like the interior trim hide, while there are seven options for the handcrafted veneer. Customers can select their wheels from Bentley’s new range of bespoke Bentayga alloy wheels, with sizes ranging from 20-inch to 22-inch. The Bentayga is offered with six lifestyle-oriented packages and two styling packs. Like every other Bentley, the Bentayga can be handed over to H. J. Mulliner & Co in case the wide variety of options isn’t enough.
Despite all this handcrafted luxury and what not, Bentley claims that the Bentayga is as capable off the road as it is on tarmac. In addition to Bentley’s Drive Dynamics Mode, the Bentayga can be had with the optional Responsive Off-Road Setting. This setting allows the driver to set up the vehicle according to surface conditions. Bentley say that the transmission and four-wheel-drive system have been strengthened to further improve its off-road capabilities. The Bentayga comes with multi-mode air suspension that offers four modes to choose from " High 2, High 1, Normal and Low.
Driver assists include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), predictive ACC, Traffic Sign Recognition, Rear Crossing Traffic Warning and Top View, which is a four-camera system to provide an overall picture of the SUV’s surroundings. It will also get park assist, electronic night vision and a heads-up display. The driver can choose from eight driving modes that, along with the Bentley Dynamic Ride (an electric active roll control technology) and Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS), help improve ride quality.
