Biden calls Chattanooga shooter a 'perverted jihadist' during memorial | Reuters

REUTERS - Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday called the man who fatally shot four U.S. Marines and a Navy sailor a "perverted jihadist" during a eulogy for the servicemen at a memorial in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Biden told a packed arena that the ideology that drove Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, a 24-year-old engineer, to go on a rampage at two local military facilities was no match for national character.

Around Taksim Square, centre of anti-government demonstrations last summer, police fired tear gas and used water cannon against hundreds of protesters chanting "There are thieves".

Turkish court delivers rebuff to embattled Erdogan

ANKARA/ISTANBUL (Reuters) - A Turkish court on Friday blocked a government attempt to force police to disclose investigations to their superiors, setting back Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's efforts to contain the fallout from a high-level corruption scandal. Police on December 17 detained dozens of people, among them the sons of the interior minister and two other cabinet members, after a major graft probe that was kept secret from commanders who might have informed the government in advance

Russia commemorates pivotal Battle of Stalingrad

VOLGOGRAD, Russia (Reuters) - The city of Volgograd readopted its old name of Stalingrad for a few hours on Saturday, as Russia commemorated the 70th anniversary of the battle that turned the tide of World War Two. The victory in the six-month Battle of Stalingrad, which killed about 2 million people, is a symbol of national pride which has produced an outburst of patriotic fervour and, for some, nostalgia for the Soviet era and dictator Josef Stalin. President Vladimir Putin flew to Volgograd, known as Stalingrad from 1925 until 1961, to lay a wreath and meet veterans after a military parade led by soldiers in World War Two uniforms and featuring a wartime T-34 tank
