Status update: Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg weds

For anyone beyond the most intimate circle of friends of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, the intimation came only on Facebook. A day after  his social networking company listed on Nasdaq, the iconic entrepreneur  updated his status on his Facebook page - to “married”. Zuckerberg, who turned 28 last week, married Priscilla Chan, 27. The couple met at Harvard - while waiting in a queue for the bathroom after a party! - and have been together for over nine years. The private wedding ceremony - in the backyard of Zuckerberg’s home in Palo Alto, California - was attended by fewer than 100 guests. And it was a surprise even for the guests: they had turned up in the belief that they were there to celebrate Chan’s graduation earlier in the week from medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, reports AP. [caption id=“attachment_315084” align=“alignleft” width=“380” caption=“Zuckerberg, who turned 28 last week, married Priscilla Chan, 27. AP”]  [/caption] The wire service quoted a source authorised by the couple to speak as saying that  Zuckerberg personally designed the wedding ring, which featured “a very simple ruby”. When they met first, all those years ago, Priscilla Chan, a Chinese-American from the Boston suburbs,  didn’t warm up to the man who would become a social media icon barely years later. She told The New Yorker that at first she thought Zuckerberg was “this nerdy guy who was just a little bit out there.” Zuckerberg subsequently dropped out of Harvard  to devote all his time to Facebook. Once, he was seated outside after a campus recruiting session when Chan walked by. The Harvard Crimson reports on what happened then. Zuckerberg hailed her: “Hey Priscilla, do you want a job at the facebook?” Her response: “I’d love a job at facebook.” She then offered him a candy. Technology writer Sarah Lacy notes in her book that when Chan and Zuckerberg were dating, Priscilla imposed strict rules on her relationship. They even drew up a contract to cover many aspects of their relationship. One of those rules: “One date per week, a minimum of a hundred minutes of alone time, not in his apartment, and definitely not at Facebook.”
