All our sympathies for Ariadna Guiterrez who got to wear the Miss Universe crown for a few minutes before it got taken away as host Steve Harvey came out and admitted to “making a mistake”. The excitement was palatable at the Miss Universe announcement as Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach both held hands with their eyes closed, perhaps quietly praying and hoping that they would win the title. Miss Colombia teared up even before Steve Harvey announced that, “The winner of Miss Universe 2015 is Colombia!” [caption id=“attachment_2554024” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] The final and correct crowning of Miss Universe 2015. Image courtesy: Twitter/@EW[/caption] The two on stage smiled and Miss Philippines gracefully thanked Miss Columbia (Ariadna Guiterrez) who was ecstatic and emotional as she waved the Colombian flag proudly and took the tiara and sash with joy unbound. After a good two minutes had passed, Steve Harvey had to rain all over Miss Colombia’s parade, as he came on to the stage again and said, “Okay…folks ummm, I have to apologise…the first runner up is Colombia.” Ariadna and Pia Alonzo were both shocked, perhaps Ariadna got a rude shock that no other contestant should ever get. Miss Philippines also couldn’t believe her eyes, as her hands trembled before she took to the stage to claim what would be rightfully hers. Steve Harvey also said that he takes the entire responsibility of the goof up. “I will take the responsibility for this. It’s on the card. Don’t hold it against the ladies. Still a great night,” Harvey told the audience. Wurtzbach beat as many as 80 contestants, including India’s Urvashi Rautela who didn’t find a spot even in the top 15 on Sunday. Just nit-picking, the card that Harvey showed, did not even spell elimination right.
And here’s what Harvey tweeted, again erroneously, before promptly deleting it.
Look like he got not just the contestant, but the spelling of their countries wrong as well, Philippines became Phillipians and Colombia became Columbia. The internet as usual had a few things to say about the gaffe, from memes to gifs, and even sympathy for the ladies, swathed the world wide web in just a few minutes.
At least she got to feel what it actually feels like to win #MissUniverse2015, so that's a nice silverlining. pic.twitter.com/q8FpCfl5t2
