Islamabad: Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi’s shake-up of the military top brass has “instructive connotations” for Pakistan, said a daily, observing there was “no accountability for the military’s ineptitude”.
Mursi has deposed the country’s defence minister and a top military officer.
An editorial in the Daily Times said that Mursi’s move “ought to dispel any lingering doubts about the military’s continued interference in political decision-making”.
“Interestingly, the ‘Mursi way’ has instructive connotations for countries struggling with heavy military interference in democratic processes, Pakistan being no exception,” it said.

Pakistan has seen long periods of military dictatorship since its independence and even when political parties were in power, the army continued to wield tremendous influence.
The daily said: “…In our neck of the woods, the military remains entrenched in decision-making precisely because brave steps that could limit its power are sacrificed at the altar of political expediency.”
“Even incidents that shake the national security construct, like the Abbottabad raid to get Osama bin Laden, conveniently fade into oblivion because there was no accountability for the military’s ineptitude,” said the editorial.
