Gunmen ambush van, kill six female teachers

Jan 1, 2013

Peshawar: A police official says unknown gunmen have ambushed a van of teachers in northwest Pakistan and killed six female teachers and one man in the vehicle.

The police chief in the town of Swabi, Abdur Rasheed, says the van was carrying teachers working for a non-governmental organisation who were on their way to a community center. Gunmen attacked the vehicle on the outskirts of Swabi on Tuesday.

Rasheed did not identify the name of the organization.

Many militants in the conservative Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province where the attack took place oppose female education and have attacked female students and blown up their schools.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
