strongRajkot:/strong England made a winning start to their five-match ODI series beating India by nine runs in the first One-day International (ODI) at the spanking new Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Friday. India, chasing a target of 326, managed 316 for nine in 50 overs after Yuvraj Singh top scored with 61. James Tredwell was the pick of the English bowlers bagging four for 44 while Jade Dernbach and Tim Bresnan picked up two wickets each. Tredwell was also adjudged as Man of the Match. India were off to a flying start with Ajinkya Rahane (47) and Gautam Gambhir (52) adding 96 runs for the first wicket. But then Tredwell struck in consecutive overs to remove the India openers. England defeated us in the Test series recently. They are a good unit. A budding 23-year-old physiotherapist was gangraped and tortured in a moving bus on Sunday, an incident which shook the nation, leading to angry outburst across the country. Yuvraj first took three wickets and then scored crucial 38-run knock in India's five-wicket win. I came particularly to dedicate this Man-of-the-match award to the girl who got gangraped in Delhi. It's very sad to know what has happened and the whole team is very concerned, Yuvraj said at the post-match press conference. Yuvraj prayed that the girl should recover at the earliest. strongPune: /strongYuvraj Singh produced a brilliant all-round display as India finally brought about some cheer for their fans with a comfortable five-wicket victory over England in the first Twenty20 International here tonight. Yuvraj took three for 19 from his four overs to restrict England to a manageable 157 for six and then blasted 38 off 21 balls to set up an easy chase as the home team reached the target with 13 balls to spare. After the humiliation in the Test series, Indian team saw a change in fortune in the shortest format to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The turning point during India's chase was the eighth over when Yuvraj launched into inexperienced left-arm spinner Danny Briggs hitting him for 18 runs which included two huge sixes over the deep mid-wicket region and a boundary. Yuvraj also got another six in the 10th over bowled by Luke Wright before being dismissed trying to hit a fourth six. While Yuvraj Singh had set himself up for a place in the Indian test squad, the BCCI selection committee today sprung a surprise by bringing back Harbhajan Singh for the upcoming test series against England. Murali Vijay and Ishant Sharma have also been brought back for the series. Despite a good run of form, Ajinkya Rahane has been chosen as the reserve batsman. However, Suresh Raina has been dropped. This squad is for the first two Test matches against England. The race for the no 6 slot was up for grabs and Yuvraj Singh seems to have convinced the selectors with his domestic form. He scored a double-hundred (208*) in the Duleep Trophy and did well playing for India 'A' against England- scoring a half-century and taking five wickets. When you see Yuvraj Singh trudge in to bowl, the first thought that strikes you is not about trying to block him out. Rather, all you think about is a way to smash him out of the park. That's what Kevin Pietersen wants to do as soon as he sees Yuvraj take the ball but somehow, the left-arm orthodox spinner gets him out each time. Yuvraj has dismissed KP on six occasions (four times in ODIs, once in Tests and once in a first-class game) and slowly but surely, he has established himself as a bowler who takes wickets. During the 2011 World Cup, he was one of India's most successful bowlers and even in the T20 format he has established himself as someone skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni can trust. And his five-wicket haul against the England XI showed that perhaps the improvement will not be restricted to just the shorter formats. He isn't a non-regular bowler anymore. He isn't a bowler who you can call a sureshot wicket-taker either. But he is someone who has developed a knack of taking crucial wickets. So how did this happen? The rest of the tail batted well enough to ensure that England had alead of 57 runs. Steve Finn had injured his thigh muscles and will not be taking any further part in the match. Yuvraj had also scored a half-century while India A were batting and the selectors will find it hard to ignore his allround show when they sit to select the squad for the first Test at Ahmedabad on Monday.
