Maratha strongman Vilasrao Deshmukh, Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, has died in Chennai as a result of kidney and liver failure. Deshmukh had taken ill and was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai. On 7 August, Deshmukh was pronounced critical and was airlifted to Chennai and admitted to the Global Health City super-specialty hospital where he was to undergo a liver transplant.
