Narendra Modi is India's 14th Prime Minister. Born on September 17, 1950, he was introduced to the right-wing Hindu nationalist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at the age of eight. The RSS assigned him to the BJP in 1985. He was appointed the chief minister of that state in 2001. Modi's administration in Gujarat was credited for many developmental projects. However, his government came under immense criticism for showing complicity in the 2002 Gujarat Riots. Although courts have found no evidence to prosecute Modi. He has encouraged efficiency in the bureaucracy, and centralized power through the abolition of the planning commission. Modi has begun a high-profile sanitation campaign, and loosened environmental and labour laws. He launched a massive demonetisation drive in November 2016 with a view to curb corruption, counterfeit currency and move India towards a cashless economy.
