strongNew Delhi:/strong That Tata Motors is in serious trouble in the domestic passenger vehicle market is no longer in doubt. According to a report by Morgan Stanley analysts Binay Singh and Shreya Gaunekar this morning, the company has lost more than five percent market share in cars and MPVs in 12 months ending this February to settle at 9.7 percent while its UV market share has more than halved to 5.5 percent from 15.3 percent in the same 12-month period. In February alone, the company saw year-on-year 62 percent decline in domestic sales of cars and UVs at 10,613 vehicles. A story in the emEconomic Times/em speaks of market share in passenger car segment falling to its lowest level of 4.9 percent in February in a decade. While it is true that the passenger car market is declining itself but Tata's steep fall is much faster than anyone else's and this is where the concern arises from. Tata Motors Ltd and UltraTech Cement Ltd shares briefly dropped as much as 10 percent each, before sharply cutting losses, after a series of shares were sold at lower prices, traders said. The block sales took place in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) at much lower prices than either company was trading at at the time, sending the shares crashing and sparking speculation of a freak trade. Tata Motors today reported 3.82 percent decline in its total vehicle sales to 75,773 units in September. The company had sold 78,783 units in the same month last year, Tata Motors said in a statement. The total passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market stood at 21,652 units in September, down 17.73 percent from 26,319 units in the same month last year. Sales of the company's Nano small car stood at 5,491 units during the month compared to 2,936 units in the year-ago period, translating into an increase of 87.02 percent. The breaking up of the sales tie-up between Tata Motors and Fiat is proving to be long and painful.
