New Delhi: Reliance Infrastructure-led Delhi Airport Metro Express will close down from Sunday for an unspecified period apparently due to some cracks in the civil structure and technical problems.
The country's first public-private-partnership metro project has had a tumultuous journey in the past 16 months after it began operations in February, 2011.
The Delhi Metro has received a communication from the concessionaire this evening that they intend to stop services from Sunday, Delhi Metro spokesman Anuj Dayal said. However, he did not give any reason why the Reliance Infrastructure took the extreme step of closing down the Metro services for an unspecified period.
E Sreedharan, the superstar engineer who presented Delhi with its state-of-the-art Metro, wants to build a similar train service in his home-state Kerala, but apparently the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and some lobbies aren't too enthused by his plan.
It's shocking that the hindrance to Sreedharan's leadership role, that is delaying the take-off of the Rs. 5100 crore Kochi Metro, comes from the same organisation that he built and nurtured.
Post Delhi Metro, Sreedharan had become a legendary son-of-the-soil in the state and was projected as the alternative name for Kochi Metro. The government had sought his assistance in the planning stages itself and he agreed with a promise of completing the project within a pre-set period. Both the state and the engineer wanted the new rail system to benefit from the expertise of DMRC.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Reliance Infrastructure engineers and workers check for faulty pillar and joints along the Delhi Metro Airport express line in New Delhi on July 12, 2012. The Delhi Metro Airport Express, which suspended its operations August 8 after major construction defects were found, is likely to resume services in late August.

New Delhi: A toy replica of a Metro train that travels back and forth on elevated and underground tracks was unveiled on Thursday at the Delhi Metro museum here.
The working model of Delhi Metro, which is approximately 20 feet in length, has been designed meticulously to give visitors the real feel of how a train runs in underground and elevated corridors, Mangu Singh, managing director of Delhi Metro, said at the inaugural function.
