strongLondon:/strong Andy Murray's tearful defeat in his first Wimbledon final proved the catalyst for the Scot's golden summer, according to Roger Federer, the man who crushed Murray's hopes that day in July. Federer's ruthless display on Centre Court to win a seventh Wimbledon title was a massive blow for Murray for whom it was his fourth defeat in a grand slam final. Inevitable questions were raised about Murray's ability to get over the final hurdle yet the 25-year-old rebounded a few weeks later to beat Federer in the Olympic singles final and in September he won the US Open by defeating world number one Novak Djokovic in a five-set epic. Federer and Murray will clash for the third time in London this year on Sunday in the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals with the Swiss two wins away from a seventh title. The 31-year-old said his victory over the British favourite at Wimbledon may have been a watershed moment for Murray whose first two grand slam final defeats came at the hands of Federer in the 2008 US Open and 2010 Australian Open. strongLondon:/strong Wimbledon champions Roger Federer and Serena Williams were on course for further success at the All-England Club after booking their places in the Olympic singles semi-finals on Thursday. World number one Federer will face Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro for a place in the final, while Williams takes on top women's seed Victoria Azarenka in a repeat of her Wimbledon semi last month. The two other semi-finals will pit Beijing bronze medallist Novak Djokovic against number three seed Andy Murray, and Russia's Maria Kirilenko faces her team mate Maria Sharapova. Federer secured his place in the last four with a 6-4 7-6 win over America's John Isner, snatching victory in the second-set tiebreak with a cheeky shot which bounced off the top of the net. You just feel bad really. But relief because it's finally over... maybe I just got really lucky today, Federer told reporters. I don't want to say that I feel invincible right now, but I feel good, he added. I'm not the only guy with confidence ... It's a complete open tournament, I think. strongWimbledon:/strong John Isner will play on Centre Court at Wimbledon for the first time on Thursday, a privilege that he eagerly awaits. The bonus? It's his first Olympics, and his opponent is Roger Federer, winner of a record-equalling seven titles at the All England Club. It's going to be a very fun experience, said No 10 seed Isner, who described the chance to play the World No 1 on Wimbledon's main court in the quarterfinals as pretty special. After that match, third-seeded Maria Sharapova plays Kim Clijsters in the quarterfinals on the same court. Sharapova, who dropped the first set before recovering to beat No 15 seed Sabine Lisicki of Germany 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-3, said she and the Belgian, who plans to retire after the US Open, know each other's games well even though it is their first meeting on grass. She's such a tough competitor, such a great mover, said Sharapova, who is herself known for competitive fire. She has so many great qualities as a tennis champion. strongWimbledon, England:/strong Olympic tennis became deafening Sunday. Under Wimbledon's roof, the sound of pelting rain nearly drowned out Maria Sharapova's piercing shrieks. The event moved indoors for the first time since the 1912 Games, and Sharapova made her Olympic debut amid a din, beating Shahar Peer of Israel 6-2, 6-0. You hear a little bit of it, but it's not a big distraction, Sharapova said. When you see the schedule and you see your name on Centre Court, you know that your match is going to get done. Knowing what the weather forecast was going to be like today, I was pretty happy. Play on other courts was curtailed because of rain, with 32 matches postponed before they started and four suspended in progress. On my first visit to Wimbledon since the 1993 Championships, what struck me was how much some things change and how some don't, not even a whit. The big difference was in the effort it took to reach the tennis complex from Southfields tube station. I suppose it has to do with age when one kilometer feels like three when you hit the road. But Wimbledon's timelessness drives away the fatigue easily. Just about everything here looks exactly the way it did in 1993, barring of course the excessive security check which has now become mandatory at any international sports event. Wimbledon champions Serena Williams and Roger Federer are in action on the opening day of the Olympic tennis tournament on Saturday, returning to the centre court just three weeks after their triumphs. Five-times Wimbledon winner Williams faces Serbia's Jelena Jankovic in the second match on the 15,000 capacity court and is followed by Federer, who lifted the trophy for the seventh time this month, against Colombia's Alejandro Falla. For all Federer's 17 Grand Slam titles, an Olympic singles medal has eluded him, although he won gold in the men's doubles in 2008.
