Why is Google's Olympic doodle so boring?

Google has predictably created a special Olympics doodle for the Olympics, which is cute but well… a little underwhelming. Given that this is the same company that gave us a playable Les Paul guitar, a stop motion animation of flowers growing to commemorate earth day, and hours of Pacman fun, what gives with the cute yet static cartoony doodle, Google? The doodle which features five sportsmen and women (symbolizing the five rings and continents we imagine) is really ‘awww’ worthy, but not much else. You look at it and then move on. Really. That cat video you’re buffering is far more interesting. Even clicking on it frantically doesn’t make it more interesting. However it does take you to a detailed information page on which you can see the schedules of the various sporting events and the timing of opening ceremony in IST, with a bunch of helpful links including that of the official site. [caption id=“attachment_393315” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]  Yawn.[/caption] Which begs the question - is Google joining the long list of people who are getting increasingly disheartened by London’s hosting of the Olympics? The city has already faced security problems, and an early gaffe when organizers showed pictures of the North Korean womens football team next to the South Korean flag. Oops. All eyes will turn to London today for the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, an exuberant journey from Britain’s idyllic pastures through the grime of the Industrial Revolution and ending in a contemporary world dominated by popular culture. The three-hour showcase created by Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire” director Danny Boyle will be watched by a crowd of 60,000 in the main stadium built in a run-down area of London’s East End and a global audience of more than a billion. The Games will also answer the question on Britons’ lips — were seven years of planning, construction and disruptions, and a price tag of $14 billion (£8 billion) during one of the country’s worst recessions, actually worth it? If one were to judge by their doodle, Google doesn’t seem to think so.
