Vodafone Essar today launched a new phone targeting the Facebook user, designed “to put the Facebook experience into the heart of the handset”. The phone, Vodafone Blue, is priced at Rs 4,950. Vodafone Blue has been developed in collaboration with Facebook, allowing users easy navigation to popular Facebook actions such as status updates, photo sharing and chat. The device comes bundled with free Facebook access for one year. Clarifying why Vodafone felt the need to launch this product, Kumar Ramanathan, chief marketing officer, Vodafone Essar, said, “The mobile Internet plays a central role in the daily lives of millions of Vodafone users, many of whom are avid Facebook users. Vodafone Blue is the answer to our youth’s mobile networking needs.” The key features of the phone are highlighted in the film below The marketing will include a 2 min 10 sec commercial made by Ogilvy & Mather, slated to break media later this week. Ramanathan sees the mobile internet as a key component in bridging the digital divide between those in urban and non-urban India, saying that this phone addressed many key gaps – affordability, access and content.
