An almost identical replica of the Samsung Grand, WickedLeak has given the Indian market the Wammy Titan. The only difference lies in the larger screen and higher resolution, and definitely some other hardware specifications. Let’s check out the difference and see whether it manages to woo the Indian consumers.

Design and build quality

The Wammy Titan looks exactly like the Samsung Grand from the front. Encased in an all white and glossy shell with a chrome border, the Titan is 9.9 mm in thickness. The chassis is rugged, but the glossy exterior can be tarnished easily. The front panel bears the large 5.5-inch TFT display with the camera, light and proximity sensors and the earpiece on the top. The bottom has two capacitive buttons for back and menu each with a physical large home button. The rear panel sports the 8MP camera with an LED flash to the right while the bottom half has the speaker. In between is a large logo of WickedLeak and an embossed Android logo.

The top features a second microphone and the earphone jack while the bottom has the main mic and the micro USB slot. The volume rocker and the power/standby buttons take their place on the left and right sides respectively. The entire phone measures 151.5 mm in height and 81 mm in width while the weight stands at 160 grams. Apart from the basic package contents such as the charger and earphone, bundled along with the Titan is a screen protector, a capacitive stylus and a flip case which is attached with an additional back panel. Overall, the phone looks good on the design front,, with only the large company logo on the rear panel that is a downer. We feel that the manufacturer should try and reduce the size of the logo to make the phone even more appealing.

Performance

Testing the Titan using standard benchmarking apps was done as usual. AnTuTu scored 5983, Quadrant scored 2736 while Nenamark2 resulted in 20.4 fps. Lastly, Linpack scored 39.563 MFLOPS in the single thread test and 57.331 in the multi-thread test. Going by the synthetic tests, the Titan scored almost 40 percent lower scores compared to the Samsung Grand, but is almost at par with other dual-core smartphones in the similar budget.

The user interface is a custom home launcher that closely replicates Samsung’s Touchwiz on its Galaxy series. The user interface is not very smooth and there is a noticeable jitter to it if you move across screens slowly. Casually, one would swipe around swiftly and this goes unnoticed. Overall, there is not much issue with the user interface.

Media

Titan can playback all your music and media files out of the box without a sigh. We ran a few standard to full high definition videos and did not manage to complain too much. Although the full HD 1080p videos were a tad jittery, they played almost flawlessly. The rear speaker is pretty loud when using it indoors and the audio quality is about average. The audio volume outdoors is very poor and you will need headphones even for casual videos and music playback. The bundled headphones are in-ear type and match the phone’s white glossy colour and look pretty good too. But sadly, the audio quality of the earphones is below average. They can be good enough for basic home videos and voice calls, but if you are to enjoy music and videos, you would need to invest in better quality earphones.

Indoor shoots are pretty sad

Camera

The performance of the 8MP rear camera is below average. Outdoor shots were very dull with bad colour and contrast. The red colours appear oversaturated and the photographs are almost useless. Sharpness levels are also too low. Indoor shots were no good either. Pictures taken here too were not sharp and lack contrast levels altogether. Videos are decent, but again, the picture quality is below average. Overall, the camera performs very badly and is a downside of the product.

Outdoor shoots are equally sad. The 8 MP camera seems to under perform

Battery life

To test the battery life of the internal 2800 mAh battery, we ran continuous loop of a standard definition video on it. We kept the brightness and audio levels to high and cut off the Wi-Fi. The maximum battery life we obtained in continuous video entertainment mode was an impressive 6 hours and 30 minutes. Playback of music and basic telephony would give you a higher battery life.

Verdict

The Wammy Titan is a good smartphone for those seeking a dual-core Android smartphone with larger display in a smaller budget. The large 5.5-inch qHD IPS panel is great for entertainment and surfing the Internet. But since the market is already seeing a lot of quad-core processor enabled handsets in a similar price range, we suggest you hold on for a while and have a look at the other models. But if you are in a hurry for a good low-priced, large screen and dual-core Android smartphone, this one is a good buy. Additionally, this one sports the latest Android operating system, the Jelly Bean v 4.1.1. However, if a good camera is also a requirement, then we suggest you look elsewhere.
