Increased use of Internet or downloading a lot of apps can leave your mobile device vulnerable to security threats. Just like you need a security suite on your PC, it’s recommended that you have a good security app for your mobile device. It will not only protect you from online threats, but help you keep a track of your phone and delete your data before it falls in wrong hands. Lookout Mobile Security app brings you a host of useful features that will keep your device safe.

Features/UI
Lookout underwent a complete overhaul of UI and now sports a very simple look and follows the style of social networking sites. The homepage is more like a news feed that provides you with all the information about the activities that the app has undertaken; it will also notify you if something needs your attention. So, in a glance you will be able to know the status of your device. While the ticker occupies the top half of the screen, you will find the list of all the main features such as Security, Backup, Missing Device, Safe Browsing and Privacy Advisor at the bottom half. You can click on each of them to know the status and perform some actions. The menu bar can be accessed from the top right hand corner. From here, you can access Setting, Account information and even the option to share the app. Clicking on settings will take you to extended options for each of the main features. From here, you can schedule scan, schedule backup and manage other settings.

Lookout Mobile Security provides some robust features that will ensure your mobile device is protected at all times. Just like any other mobile security tool, it provides you with the option to back up your data. Lookout allows you to back up your contacts, photos and even call history. However, the ability to back up photos and call history is a premium feature, which can be accessed only if you purchase the app. You can access the backed up data from the Lookout website using the same login details that you have on your device. If the need arises, you can opt to restore the data to your device.

One of the useful features of Lookout is the app security it provides. It will scan all the apps that you have installed on your device and bring you all the related data like its memory usage, cache and most importantly, all the data that the app has access to. It will highlight the ones that will cost you money. You can access all this data via Privacy Advisor. It will segregate the apps into categories like the ones that access location information, read identity info, access messages, contacts etc. You can see the apps in each of these categories and then view the details for individual apps. In case you are not comfortable with sharing certain information with a particular app, then you can force stop or uninstall it directly from here.

Lookout also provides some handy features that will help you locate your device in case of theft. You can track your phone using a PC. It includes a Scream feature, which when remotely activated, will ring-out a high pitched sound so you can find your device in case you have misplaced it. This feature works even if the phone is on silent. It has also recently introduced the Signal Flare feature that records the last known location of your phone as the device battery is running out. Apart from this, premium features include the ability to remotely lock your device and even wipe all the data.

Additionally, the app also provides web security via its Safe Browsing feature by flagging websites when you are browsing the Internet on your device. It provides protection from malicious, phishing and other harmful sites. However, the feature functions only if you are using the stock Android browser or Chrome.

Performance
Installing the app and working your way around the features is quite simple and intuitive. It doesn’t slow down your device, even when scanning or backup is underway. Lookout does a good job scanning all the apps and bringing you the information about them. It also performs scan each time an app is updated. However, while it provides you with the information about the data accessed by the apps, it doesn’t tell you whether or not the app really needs those to function and are therefore necessary. If it could provide that information, then it would have been really useful. The app also updates its database for new threats as and when they occur; this ensures that the users don’t have to worry about the threats. While it has good features like Remote Lock and Wipe, or even the newly introduced Signal Flare, it lacks a feature that some other apps provide – sending you a notification when a new SIM is inserted into your device.

Verdict
Having said that, overall it’s a good app that will keep your device and data away from prying eyes. As expected, the most useful features like Remote Lock and Wipe are premium features, but if you do not wish to pay and are looking for some app that will keep you safe when browsing the web and downloading apps, then Lookout is a great option.

Lookout Mobile Security is available for Andorid and iOS. We tested the app on an Android device and while majority of the features are similar for both platforms, a few like the Remote Lock and Wipe are limited only to Android. But the iPhone app has certain additional features like Wi-Fi security scan, remote calling, amongst others. While the iPhone app is free, you can choose from a free and a premium version for Android. The premium version will cost you approximately Rs 163 for a month and Rs 1,638 for a year.
