Brother has been manufacturing multi-functional printers for quite some time now and this time is the release of an exclusive fast printer aimed at small office and home segments—the MFC-J625DW. Let’s check out what this MFP has to offer.

Auto duplex printing

The Brother MFC-J625DW is an all-in-one printer, which features a printer, a flatbed scanner, a facsimile machine and a copier in one single unit. It has a very small footprint due to its compact size and is suitable for those looking for an all-in-one unit for use in a small office or home. The printer uses four cartridges and can print at a high resolution of 6000 x 1200 dpi. The flatbed scanner is a legal size scanner, which can scan at interpolated resolutions of 19,200 x 19,200 dpi (1200 x 2400 dpi optical) at 32-bit scan depths. It also features an ADF, which can support up to 20 legal size sheets. The copier can do both black & white as well as colour documents with reduction and enlargements of documents from 25 percent to 400 percent, respectively. Poster function in copying is also possible. Fax documents can be sent in colour as well using the built-in 14.4 Kbps modem in less than 7 seconds per page. The fax documents can be scheduled and you can also receive and store up to 400 pages of fax, if the paper runs out. The MFC also features a built-in auto-duplex unit, which enables the user to print on both sides of the paper. This not only enables the user to save on paper, but also saves time and the trouble of manually flipping and reinserting the paper after one batch of prints are done.

The MFC-J625DW can connect to the PC using a standard USB 2.0 interface and to the network using wireless b/g/n networking, but sadly there is no physical Ethernet interface, if you don’t have a wireless router in your home or office. Other interfaces, include a USB port, which supports PictBridge for digital cameras and USB flash drives from which documents and photos can be printed from and scanned to. An MMC card reader is also available for the same option. Documents scanned can be exported in the form of TIFF, JPEG, BMP, MAX, HTM, PCX, DCX, PNG, FPX and PDF to the flash card or to the USB flash drive without the need for a PC to do the same.

The MFC features a tilting 1.9-inch display, which is a touch-enabled screen and is a part of the entire control panel and is used for configuring and accessing the printer’s functionality. The rest of the control panel features buttons for scan, fax, copy, photo, home, power, dialing pad, stop/cancel and color / black copy.

The printer uses a total of four cartridges (C, M, Y and K) for printing and each cartridge can yield a total of 600 pages. The cartridge costs around Rs.435 each and the estimated print economy can be estimated at Rs.0.7 per black print and Rs.2.10 per colour print (excluding the paper costs). The printer can handle a monthly duty cycle of a maximum 2,500 pages and the recommended monthly print volume by the manufacturer is around 250-800 pages.

Brother also has an app for Android, Apple and Windows-based phones called ‘Brother iPrint&Scan’, which is free and can be used to print or scan directly from/to the phone using the wireless network. Bundled along with the MFC-J625DW is a disk, containing the software Scansoft PaperPort v12 SE with OCR for Windows and Presto! PageManager for Mac.

Design and build quality

The MFC-J625DW is slightly different from most printers manufactured by Brother. It has a very good quality plastic shell with an all black matte-finished exterior. The ADF, which is built into the scanner’s lid has a tray that is glossy black and can retain scratches and fingerprints in no time. This tray doubles as the lid to cover the ADF to prevent dust entry into the scanner area. On the top (front side) also lies the complete control panel, which includes all the buttons and the display for operating the unit. The front panel comprises of the USB port for PictBridge, the card reader and the front-loading and output paper tray. The input paper tray can hold up to 100 sheets of legal and A4 size paper, while the output tray can withstand a maximum of 50 sheets of paper. The input tray consists of two compartments — the lower half fills up with regular paper, while the upper half can hold 20 sheets of photo paper. A small lever needs to be pushed ahead, which loads the photo paper into the printer and disconnects the regular paper tray from the printer. This is beneficial for a busy office as one can load the photo tray as well as the regular paper tray and switch between the medium types before printing. The lever also has a small physical indicator on the front of the paper tray to visually alert the user of the type of medium ready for printing.

Smartphone accessibility

The rear of the MFC-J625DW has just the duplex printing mechanism, which is also used to remove paper jams, if any. The left side of the MFC has the main power socket and the RJ11 phone jack for the fax unit. The USB port is located below the scanner (similar to all Brother units) and the wire is routed towards the back of the unit. Though this method makes the cable routing easier and neater, it tends to shorten the USB cable by around a foot or more, making it difficult to place the printer further from the PC when required.

The MFC-J625DW is a good performer, in terms of printing and speeds. The manufacturer claims that the printer can print at maximum speeds of 35 pages per minute in black and 27 pages per minute in colour in fast modes. But, as per our printing tests, which are performed by printing a regular standard office document in both black and colour, we got the highest maximum speeds of 22 ppm in black and 21 ppm in colour using fast mode. Normal modes can spew prints speeds of 12 ppm and 11 ppm in black and colour, while best modes can give out a maximum of 3 pages in both black and colour modes. A 4x6 photo copy took us a straight two minutes for a best quality print. Scanning an A4-size photo to the PC (via USB) at 300 dpi takes around 10 seconds only. Copying a black A4 page takes 17 seconds and a colour A4 page takes approximately 12 seconds.

We took a good look at the print quality and found it efficient and sharp and the printer is fast too. The quality of the photo print was well above average — lacked colour brilliance and a little sharpness and details. But, the overall print quality is good enough for regular photo printing.

Worth a buy

To sum up the whole experience with the MFC-J625DW, we assume that the printer is pretty feature rich with the functionalities, print speeds and quality. What we found disappointing is the absence of an Ethernet port for connecting the printer to a physical network. But overall, considering the features, build quality, performance, functionality and the low price tag, the Brother MFC-J625DW is a well-recommended printer for small offices and homes.

The XPS 13 Ultrabook is a slim 6 mm at its thinnest point (only 18 mm at its thickest point), and features a 33.7 cm (13.3) HD display cleverly fit into a footprint that\'s similar to an 27.9 cm (11) laptop. XPS 13 feels as good as it looks, thanks to a comfort-designed keyboard and a sleek, gesture-enabled glass touch pad. XPS 13 boots in as little as 8 seconds and resumes from sleep mode in just 1 second (4 seconds from deep sleep). A solid-state drive and Intel Rapid Start Technology make it possible. Intel Smart Connect Technology keeps your email, contacts, calendar and social networks up-to-date, even when your XPS 13 is in sleep mode. With 2nd gen Intel Core processors, this Ultrabook delivers the speed and performance you’ve come to expect from the XPS family.
