VLC Player on Android?

It’s been absolutely aeons since the popular lightweight all-format media player VLC made it onto iPhones and a few months since it was ported to iPads. Now it seems the VLC developers are working on an Android version, which is apparently only a “few weeks away”.

The VLC team has been working on a port for a while now, but was hampered by the fact that Android’s multimedia output was Java based. However, with Google releasing an updated Native Development Kit (NDK) earlier this month, things just got a whole lot easier.

Won't be long until you spot this familiar traffic cone on the Android Market

Before we begin to celebrate though, it’d be prudent to place some emphasis on the fact that issues with particular devices could delay the release. Developers have had a tough time maintaining application uniformity among the myriad of Android devices, and VLC is no exception.

You can track the application’s progress on its project page here. Now, this could be wishful thinking, but will some kind soul please port Media Player Classic – Home Cinema to mobile devices now?
