Supplier of power efficient x86 processor platforms, VIA Technologies has inked a deal with Simmtronics Semiconductors Ltd. to facilitate tablet manufacturing in India. In an official announcement by VIA Technologies Inc., the company confirmed that Simmtronics will manufacture tablets powered by WonderMedia PRIZM SoC (System-on-Chip) platforms in India, thereby fuelling tablet manufacturing in the country. VIA added that it has set up dedicated production facilities in India at Noida, Uttar Pradesh, making it the first ever such unit in India. Among the several niches that VIA claims that the unit would cater to, is the education segment in the country.

Revealing further information VIA Technologies has stated that the first tablets to be manufactured will be based on the WM8650 platform and will run on Android. It will sport a 7-inch screen and will be characterised by a light and compact form factor. VIA adds that the tablets for the Indian masses would feature smart multimedia, computing, and communications capabilities.
