Updated: Geohot Goes After Windows Phone 7

Remember Geohot? The guy who created Jailbreak for the iPhones and was recently responsible for the whole PS3 jailbreak fiasco. He has now decided to try and jailbreak the Windows Phone 7 as well. In an update on his blog, he says, "perhaps a more appropriate way to deal with jailbreakers, I'm going out to buy a Windows 7 phone."

It’s not the first time someone has tried to breakthrough the Windows Phone 7 security. As we had reported earlier, ChevronWP7 were the first to give us a proper jailbreak which allowed the user to develop and install a Windows Phone 7 application on any phone. It also bypassed Microsoft’s approval process. Eventually, the ChevronWP7 team and Windows Phone 7 devs sat down and discussed the potential of homebrew on the device as well as stronger protection of WP7 developer intellectual property on the WP7 platform. At the end of the day, the hackers were given a T-shirt which said “I was the first to jailbreak Windows Phone 7, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt”.

Let’s see how Microsoft responds to the news and what steps it takes. Be sure to check back as we will be keeping an eye on this interesting piece of news.

Update: It looks like Microsoft has decided take the Mr. Cool route after hearing of Geohot's intent.

After Geohot stated that he wants to take a crack at the Windows Phone 7, Microsoft developer platform product management head Brandon Watson tweeted the following:

#geohot if you want to build cool stuff on #wp7, send me an email and the team will give you a phone – let dev creativity flourish #wp7dev”.

It looks like Microsoft wants be in geohot's good books and wants to avoid the whole iPhone-PS3 Jailbreak fiasco. In the end, only two things can come out of this deal -

1. Geohot and Microsoft work together and strengthen WP7 security

2. The whole deal backfires and Geohot crack the system open like a boiled egg.
