Twitter's music app to reportedly launch this weekend

Twitter’s much rumoured music app will be here sooner than we expect. It looks like the micro-blogging service is all set to launch Twitter Music at the Coachella music festival over the weekend.

The standalone app is all set to hit the Internet around this weekend, according to AllThingsD. It was earlier rumoured that the service will launch today itself, but it looks like the announcement might happen a little later in the weekend, even as the Coachella Music Fest is underway.

Earlier yesterday, Twitter confirmed the acquisition of the startup “We Are Hunted”, a popular music tracking tool that will play a huge part in the soon to be launched Twitter Music service.

According to reports that emerged last month, Twitter had acquired We Are Hunted last year and had been working on building a music discovery service app ever since. The service will apparently help users discover new music based on content from their Twitter profiles, making it a slightly unique idea as compared to other services in this category.

The app is set to be simply called Twitter Music. Tracks shown by this new service are going to be hosted by SoundCloud. The app once launched will prompt Twitter users to sign into the service using their existing Twitter accounts in order to receive personalised music recommendations. Users who do not have a Twitter account too will be able to use the service, thereby increasing the chance of the service gaining more followers.

Twitter Music, according to the report, will have four main tabs. “Suggested” will recommend songs and artistes based on the artistes you are already following or people you follow are following, kind of Last FM with Twitter integration. "#NowPlaying" will bring in links to songs posted by other people you follow using this already popular hashtag.

What the service might look like


The app will have two more tabs – “Popular”, which will aggregate tracks that are doing well at that point of time, and “Emerging” to list down up-and-coming tracks and artistes. We Are Hunted employees have apparently been testing the app out on Twitter as seen in a tweet by the company’s co-founder Stephen Phillips. The embedded music player looks exactly the same as SoundCloud’s, except for the fact that the shiny orange play button has been replaced by a Twitter blue one.

We Are Hunted, the music discovery site, was founded in 2008 and works on pulling music trends from blogs, social media and P2P networks. Try accessing the website and it announces that We Are Hunted has joined Twitter. If you had a We Are Hunted account in the past, you can “grab your favourites” even as the service starts to shut accounts down. The website says that We Are Hunted cannot reveal what it’s working on with Twitter. Don’t worry, we’ve already guessed it and cannot wait for Twitter Music!
