In an age where Google has led us to expect immediate and accurate search results - most of which are completed even before we finish typing – social networking sites’ search functionalities have not been so great. Most such sites lack proper autocomplete, search suggestion and spelling correction functionality, making their search function rather obsolete. As one of the largest and most popular social platforms, Twitter is not one to be left behind in this area, and today introduced two new features to improve its search functionality. The microblogging site’s search will now feature search autocomplete and ‘People you follow’ search results.
According to the Twitter blog, search autocomplete shows you the most likely terms for your query, as you enter it — especially useful if you’re trying to follow the hashtag for an event or you’re looking for a certain Twitter account. You can select your query from the drop-down menu even before you finish typing it. The ‘People you follow’ feature lets you see Tweets about a given topic from only the people you follow when you select the ‘People you follow’ view, in addition to seeing ‘All’ or ‘Top’ Tweets for your search.

Twitter has also made available several other features to improve search results. Some of these include automatic spelling corrections, where if you mistype a word, Twitter will automatically correct the spelling; related suggestions, where Twitter will display results related to what you searched for; and functionality for results featuring both real names and Twitter usernames.
This is the latest in a string of tweaks that Twitter has been making in the last few months. Last month, Twitter added some new tweaks to Expanded Tweets and launched a new feature called tailored trends. Expanded Tweets now hold more content, making the experience a little more interactive. So now, when you expand a tweet containing links to partner websites, you will see content previews, be able view images, play videos and more. You will also be able to view all of this content when you expand a tweet from a friend, which contains the link of a partner website.

Tailored trends will include trending topics useful for you. The algorithm for tailored trends will base your trends on your location as well as the people you follow. Trends will be tailored for you by default on Twitter for web, mobile.twitter.com and the Twitter iPhone and Android applications. If you don't want to receive tailored trends and just want worldwide trends, you have to change your location settings to www.twitter.com. However, if you ever want to see trends in a particular country, including your own, then you can change your locations settings back to whichever country you choose.
