Tumblr has now announced an essential update related to the security of users of its iOS app. In an official blogpost, the Yahoo-owned company has stated that there was a security flaw which could have resulted in user passwords being compromised under certain circumstances. The security update has only been rolled out for Tumblr’s iPad and iPhone apps, which should ideally block this vulnerability.
In a post on the Tumblr staff blog, the company has asked all iOS users to “please download this update now” and has also asked them to change their passwords on the service, as well as on any other services which may be using the same password.
According to TNW, the company released a statement saying that a security issue was brought to its attention on Tuesday, but has been tightlipped about the exact details of the security breach. In the statement, the company had said, “Earlier today, Tumblr was notified of a security vulnerability introduced in our iOS app. We immediately released an update that repairs the issue and are notifying affected users. We obviously take these incidents very seriously and deeply regret this error.”

While the company has still not released an actual security alert on the company’s Twitter account, the blog post reportedly appears in the timeline of users when they open the iOS app on their phones. It is expected that the company will soon release the update on its Twitter account as well, which is currently followed by close to 1 million users. There has not been any security alert issued for Tumblr’s Android app, though, which suggests that Android users may be unaffected by this issue.

By sheer volume of users, Tumblr is definitely one of the most popular blogging platforms on the Internet. Bought over in June by Yahoo for a massive $1.1 billion, there was a lot of fear among users that the platform would change drastically following the buy-over.
Soon after the takeover, a new update was rolled out which focused on discovery which let users find content on Tumblr blogs easily. TNW has reported that Tumblr’s grid of blogs brings in more than 300 million unique visitors every month. According to the company itself, the platform gets close to 120,000 new signups every day and sees more than 900 posts published every second.
