Amazon’s Echo and Echo Dot with Alexa support might very well arrive on Indian shores, officially, by this Diwali. The devices were expected to arrive in India this year, and a new report suggests that 18 October, 2017 marks that date.
Citing an unnamed source, Factor Daily reports that the device was originally slated for a December 2017 release. However, that date has now been brought back to 18 October, 2017, which is the date that Diwali will be held on this year.
The report adds that the launch prices of the two devices in India will be in line with their US prices. Factor Daily claims that the Amazon Echo will be priced between Rs 11,000 and Rs 12,000 and that the Echo Dot will be priced between Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000.
Factor Daily also claims that a more localised version Alexa is being tested, which would be necessary if Alexa is to be of any use in the country.
The Amazon Echo is a voice-controlled Bluetooth speaker that can play “omni-directional” audio. It features far-field voice recognition and full support for Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant.
The Echo Dot is a tiny version of the Echo and has the same capabilities as the larger device. Of course, being a smaller device, it’s audio volume and quality will suffer, relatively speaking.
Amazon’s video-enabled Echo device, the Echo Show, isn’t likely to come to India this year.
