Tendulkar, Bollywood and Uttarakhand: The top Twitter trends for India in 2013

After announcing its year end list for global audiences, Twitter has released a more in-depth look at India trends today. Just as we saw with the top topics on Facebook this year, Twitter too follows the pattern of 'Bollywood, Cricket and Disaster' in the top trending topics for India.

Rishi Jaitly, India Market Director for Twitter, said that the highlights of the year on the micro-blogging website include Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement from cricket, Bollywood and the devastating Uttarakhand floods that ravaged parts of North India. The blog featured Tendulkar’s tweet acknowledging the messages sent to him using the #ThankYouSachin hashtag, as part of a joint activity between Twitter and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The tweet eventually went on to become the most Retweeted tweet in India this year with over 17,000 RTs.

The blog also featured an image and tweet by the official Indian Army handle, @adgpi, showing the Uttarakhand flood relief work in progress. The Indian Army officially joined Twitter this year, as did celebrities like Sourav Ganguly, Saina Nehwal, Anil Kapoor and more. Jaitly places special emphasis on Twitter becoming a “second screen for TV”, considering that people tweeted along to programmes in real time, enhancing conversation. This could well mean that Twitter could be contemplating making its TV tools available to Indian audiences and content providers.

Trending topics in India featured the usual suspects like Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi and the #ThankYouSachin hashtag. Then there were some fun hashtags on Twitter’s list like #DrashtiShouldWinJDJ6 and #ThePerfectBachelor. As far as popular news topics go, Afzal Guru, disgraced Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal and godman Asaram Bapu featured in the top five list. The knowledgeable Twitter crowd in India also discussed world issues such as the Cyclone Phailin in Southeast Asia and the unrest in Syria and Egypt.
